Frage:
Clarification of rule regarding old and new German spellings
von narionk (US/DE), 2017-09-25, 21:10  like dislike  Spam?
Hello, I haven't been very active on the forums lately. According to the comment here, there has been a change of rules regarding the way we communicate variant inflections: https://contribute.dict.cc//inflections/history.php?id=667838&f...

Unfortunately there is no forum number mentioned. I tried to find the relevant forum discussion myself but could not find one with a conclusion. This rule isn't mentioned on the Guidelines page, either. Would one of my fellow contributors please be kind enough to show me the relevant conclusion or explain to me what new entries should look like?

In the case of the inflection I linked above, information has now been lost from the database. The [alt] spellings have been removed from the original entry with a note that they should be posted as separate entries, but no one has made a separate entry! I would like to create a new entry to retain this information, but I'm unsure of the proper format for that entry. To be clear, I mean e.g. where should "[alt]" be located, and how many times should it be repeated?

It would be helpful to nonnative speakers, if instead of "rauh [alt]", the entry read "rauh [alt für rau]".  When I see the entry for "rauh", I recognize the word because I have encountered it many times in my reading.  However, I do not have any idea what the new spelling is, so I have to spend time searching for it.  The majority of the German literature available in our libraries was written before 2004.

For clarity please post old and new German spellings as separate entries!".

Format of inflections still unclear  #879385
von narionk (US/DE), Last modified: 2017-09-26, 12:06  like dislike  Spam?
Thanks to all for the discussion. So yes, the rule has changed, and this has been noted on the pages where inflections are created and edited.

I was also wrong: a separate entry for the [alt] spelling of the entry I linked was already created, so no information has been lost: https://contribute.dict.cc/inflections/edit.php?id=1070509&full...
I was used so seeing the [alt] spellings when searching for the normal spelling, but now I understand that I have to search for the [alt] spelling to see it, which as Paul states makes the entries easier to read.

Although it is not documented anywhere, the adopted convention seems to be to write the [alt] entry in the format mentioned by bommi above: "der Fluß [alt] | die Flüsse". The abbreviation "[alt]" appears once to the right of the first inflection in the list and is considered to apply to the whole list. (See e.g. "der Verschlußringabzieher [alt] | die Verschlußringabzieher".) This, however, does not make it very clear which specific inflections are actually [alt] and which are not, which perhaps becomes more relevant when looking at an inflection list like the following.

Currently we have: "beißen | biss / [alt] biß | gebissen". According to the new practice, we'll have
• "beißen | biss | gebissen" (ok, fine) and
• "beißen [alt] | biß | gebissen" (unclear what is [alt] and what is not).

Proposal: write "[alt]" following every list item (or part of a list item) to which it applies, e.g. "beißen | biß [alt] | gebissen" and "der Verschlußringabzieher [alt] | die Verschlußringabzieher [alt]". The position of "[alt]" has been somewhat inconsistent in the past, appearing either before or after the word to which it applies. I propose adopting the convention used in "dict entries" and for use in "inflections": descriptive abbreviations appear after the word or phrase to which they apply. As always, there may be situations I haven't yet thought of in which this may not work so well; if you think of any, please speak up.

It would be easier to understand if every old word form was marked directly and individually, and it would be best to follow the conventions for translations as closely as possible.

Format of inflections  #879465
von JuneS (DE), 2017-09-26, 19:18  like dislike  Spam?

Vielen Dank!

Echt schwierig aufgrund der bisherigen Einträge ...  #879574
von Paul (AT), 2017-09-27, 17:11  like dislike  Spam?

Was denkt ihr?

I understand that waves of re-opens are not fun for everyone, but I tend to favor solutions that will give the best long-term results. We have built a resource that many people rely on every day, and I think the expectation is that this resource will continue to be used far into the future. Changes to inflections are also relatively easy to make in comparison to changes to dict entries. Using the proposed new format will surely require some additional effort now, but it may also save us some effort in the future, the next time the format of inflections comes up for discussion. I say "us", despite not having been a very active contributor lately, but I'm certainly willing to help in this effort if we decide to make a change.

The main reason I like the new proposed format, however, is that I think it makes it clearer to the user exactly what is [alt] and what is not. Without this clarity, the information is only half as useful as it could be. Again, the format shall apply equally to inflections of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns. One further advantage of this method is that it gives everyone the same experience, regardless of how they access the dict.

The only downside I see to the multiple-inflection route, especially for verbs, is that it might not be possible to assign the [alt] inflections to specific dict entries (because only one inflection can be assigned to each entry). However, this seems like a very minor concern that would have very low impact.

Software-wise, I agree with JuneS that an [alt] text-insertion button on the inflection page would be helpful.

Separate or combined  #879647
von Catesse (AU), 2017-09-28, 14:19  like dislike  Spam?
If the basis of an inflection entry consists of just a single adjective or verb, or a single noun plus article, understanding a combined entry is not too difficult. If it consists of three or four words, the result with brackets and slashes is quite intimidating. However, making a distinction between long and short entries would not work. Even experienced contributors constantly flout GL that contain something like "if ..., if not ...", and I presume that this is a matter of misunderstanding rather than defiance. Researchers would seldom have reason to use the old spelling, so it is there only for the purpose of understanding "old" texts.

Precedence of "|" and "/" may not be clear to all users, so use of "/" should be minimized.  I prefer two separate inflections for this reason.

It seems to me that someone who searches for "Fluss" is probably not interested in the old spelling, so a separate inflection for the old spelling would make more sense.  Someone who searches for "Fluß", however, might want to know the new spelling.  If the format
"Fluß {m} [alt für: Fluss]"
were used for the entry, then the person who wanted to know the inflection of the new spelling could click on "Fluss" and be transfered to that entry to see its inflection.

von Paul (AT), 2017-10-02, 11:01  like dislike  Spam?
