Frage: | ..., so ... (according to) | |
I have the following example: ..., so die Berechnung des Zentrums für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung ZEW. I guess it's obvious the usage of "so", but i don't quite get the case of "die Berechnung". Is it nominativ or akkusativ? I can't really understand it fully as i want to. Please explain a bit about the case used, and whatever you find it's important here. I have already read a bit about "so" but i would like to know more about what question you ask in order to get the case it is used after it ... (hope you understand what i'm asking) |
Antwort: | nominative | #882896 |
..., so is it according to/so says/so suggests the calculation of the Centre ... "so" is being used the same way in English, especially after direct speech: "Bla bla bla," so the President of xy. |

4;Romy, we can't use "so" like that in standard British English and although I understand it, I'm not sure whether that's because I speak German or whether speakers of other regional variants of English use it. You could use "so said the president of..". It's useful to know it's followed by a nominative when it means "laut", we should probably add that to the "so [laut]" entry. |

The applicable section in Duden is: "1. b) mit Ellipse des Verbs bei Zitaten oder Quellenangaben; mit diesen Worten, in diesem Sinne äußert[e] sich …, steht es in …" "So" can replace a complete sentance: "So!" (= So macht man das) "So?" (= Ist dem so?) |

I wonder if the nominative is always used in these "so + noun" ellipses. Just for laughs, I imagined some missing words. Depending on the word, the case may not be the nominative. Laut, for example, wants me to change die Berechnung to der Berechnung. Just idle chat. |

4;RedRufus, without further context, "following" doesn't work for me here. My initial reaction without further context is that it sounds like it means "after the calculation was made". Proteus's "according to the calculation made by" is a good general, all-purpose translation, that feels to me like it would work everywhere. I can imagine that "(as) per" might work in some (or possibly even all) contexts, but I'm wary of it as a translation without seeing the full sentence. |
Antwort: | Hmm. I see "following" as something akin to "taking the formula of ... as a model" | #882912 |
But I agree with Proteus' "according to" |

4;Windfall: 2016 lag der Anteil familiengeführter Unternehmen bei 91 Prozent, so die Berechnung des Zentrums für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung ZEW. The true-or-false test question (Deutsche Welle Alltagsdeutsch-Lektion) that goes with this is Nach einer Erhebung des ZEW wird die Mehrheit der Unternehmen in Deutschland von Familien geführt. |

Thanks, Michael. I don't know about you, but I really don't like "following" there. "According to" works fine and "(as) per" seems a strange choice of word(s) and I'd avoid it here. |

It's strange--to me, the ellipsis after that German 'so' always sounds as if there's a hint of disbelief. A 'following' suggests some additional figuring by someone else, like the writer. It's not the same as zufolge. |

I always thought so as well. Glad to hear I am not the only one... |
