The above is the title of the German version of the Piaf song, 'La vie en rose'. Here 'schauen' takes the accusative but in the 2nd verse we get the dative. I can't quite see what's going on here - could someone pse explain the grammar? 'Schau mir nicht so auf den Mund, Du weisst genau den Grund, So kann's nicht weiter gehen' If you're interested, the song is on youTube by Paul Kuhn. Danke im voraus. M |

I checked the lyrics: https://www.gugalyrics.com/lyrics-469809/paul-kuhn-schau-mich-bitte... Don't get your point about accusative and dative. "Schauen" is a verb that means "to look". |
Antwort: | anschauen is not the same as schauen | #889204 |
These are two different verbs. "Anschauen" requires object in accusative, "mich" in this case; "schauen" (withou prefix an-) can be complemented with prepositional object (auf + accusative), "auf den Mund" in this case, and indirect object, "mir" in this case. |

I just read through the lyrics of the song and noticed that "shauen" appears one more time, namely in the verse "Schau die Leute ringsumher". "Schauen" can also be complemented with accusative as it appears. I hope that answers your question, but you'd better turn to native speakers for help. |

Thanks for the replies. All noted: perhaps it's to do with 'dichterische Freiheit'. Anyway, it's a lovely song in any language. M |
