How are the words "toys" and "dolls" differentiated?
von nigilmaadhust (UN), Last modified: 2018-09-25, 08:44  like dislike  Spam?
Guten Tag Forum,

when shouid I use these words "toy" and "doll" properly? For example I wanted to buy a cat doll and a helicopter toy.

I thought that a doll is one, which is operated using batteries and remote controls and so can be called toy. Because it makes some actions using batteries.

A doll cannot make movement, because it has no battery power in it. Is my understanding correct?

Best example, can I call the Child''s play Chucky a doll or toy? Many thanks and have a nice day.

Edit: Category changed.
"toy" ist der Oberbegriff "Spielzeug".   #897397

"doll" ist eine Art von Spielzeug ("Puppe").
"Modellauto" ist eine andere Art von Spielzeug.
"elektrische Eisenbahn" ist eine andere Art von Spielzeug.

Übrigens definiert sich eine "doll" nicht durch Batteriegebrauch oder Fernbedienungen. Kann, muss aber nicht.
vielen Dank, Parker. Aber ich habe noch die Frage.   #897398

Unten stehen die weiteren Beispiele für Deutlichkeit.

Barbie toy oder Barbie doll?

Chucky toy oder Chucky doll?

Annabelle toy oder Annabelle doll?

Toy Story (Disney Film) - kann das auch Doll Story sein? All toys are moving in this movie. That's why I thought moving objects are called toys and non-moving ones are dolls.

could you and others please explain further? Vielen Dank.
Barbie doll, Chucky doll, Annabelle doll  #897401

"dolls" (Puppen) sind m. E. menschlichen oder tierischen Wesen nachempfundene Spielsachen.
"toys" ist ganz allgemein Spielzeug, das schließt technische Spielsachen, aber auch Puppen mit ein.

"Toy Story" ist der Name eines Films. Den kannst Du nicht einfach "umtaufen". ;-)

Sowohl "toys" als auch "dolls" können "moving" oder "non-moving" sein, das ist kein Unterscheidungsmerkmal.
Thanks Parker, I think I am not annoying ... this is my question  #897402

Is it wrong if I say

Annabelle toy, Barbie toy, Chuck toy?

I want to know in what context this gets the term doll or toy. When do you call whether it is a toy or doll?

If I produce Spider-man like object in my factory, how should I term it in the kids market "Spider man toy" or "Spider man doll"?

Does size matter here for the term?

I am sorry that I am troubling. But I need the right context, when I can say toy or doll ....could you please tell that?
Let's wait for a Br./Am. native speaker to be sure.  #897403

You say: Barbie doll
            Chucky doll
            Annabelle doll,

If you have for example tools, this is the category, then you specify in saws, wich is now a category under the category of tools, and some different saws are:

Hand saw,     you don't call them:    Hand tool   they are a tool, but you don't name them a tool,
             Chain saw,                                    Chain tool
             Table saw                                     Table tool

you name them a saw, more cpecified, so you know, what kind of tool it is.

Another example: Screw drivers:

slotted drives       you don't say:     slotted tool
             cruciform drives                            cruciform tool
             square drives                                square tool

because then a customer could ask, give me a square tool and the seller answers here I have a Tee Square,
wich is different from what the customer meant.

So, the barbie is correctly then called "barbie doll" and barbie has also other products for the doll,
for example "barbie house"
                 "barbie car"
" barbie horse", wich are all also categories under the topic (or umbrella term)" tool".

The film Toy Story includes cars as well, as I remember, they are also toys. The word toy includes other category of toys than dolls as well, so you shouldn't use the name 'Doll Story'

If you said "Barbie toy", people would think of, e.g. the "Barbie house", the "Barbie car", or the "Barbie horse" but not the Barbie doll.

Clever marketers invented the term "action figure", but G.I. Joe is basically a doll, too.

Yes.  Generations of little boys defended themselves against accusations that they were playing with dolls:  "No, he's not a doll..."
Many thanks for all your replies. I have noted all the points and made a reference.  #897447
