|On the usage of the article...|
During an auction his attention is drawn to a painting by an unknown master. Olavi is convinced that it is a work by the legendary Russian-Finnish painter Ilya Repin.
Brauche ich den Artikel hier oder nicht? Oder ist es in diesem Fall wurscht?
It works with or without the "the". I would include the "the" if I were saying the sentence. It sounds more like something I would expect to hear in a documentary or film without. It sounds more like the artist is being bigged up (i.e. their importance is being exaggerated) without the "the" to me. This could also be a US/UK difference (with would be the UK version), as the way Americans speak English can sometimes sound overly enthusiastic to Brits (even when that isn't the intention by the US speaker).
I agree with Windfall. To me, it looks easier readable and understandable with the article, but it would be also fine without.
The form without "the" is a modern fashion, said to be imitated from the American magazine Time. It's now standard in journalese, but IMO it isn't good English.
Agreed. I don't think a native speaker would not say "... by legendary ..." unless he or she were reading a written statement.
