Frage: | yet | |
I then mentioned—not knowing what might be lost if we lost sight of him yet—that it would give me great pleasure to introduce him to my aunt, if he would ride out to Highgate, where a bed was at his service. if we lost sight of him yet: if we lost sight of him now or if we lost sight of him (at this point) already ? something else? |

I would say it's meaning 1.3 Referring to something that will or may happen in the future. ‘further research may yet explain the enigma’ ‘I know she's alive and I'll find her yet’ |

Danke. P.S.: On another forum it was suggested to me that "yet" could refer to "what might be lost" and not to "we lost sight of him". |

jetzt oder doch noch ..... Read it this way I then mentioned that it would give me great pleasure to introduce him to my aunt, if he would ride out to Highgate, where a bed was at his service - not knowing what might be lost if we lost sight of him yet. |

I find the "yet" ambiguous. As a modern reader, I read it as "not yet knowing what might be lost if we lost sight of him", because I myself have a tendency to use words like that later in the sentence than ideal. But I suspect that Dickens may have had another meaning in mind, as a modern understanding of English so often doesn't work for older usage. I also find Lllama's understanding of it plausible. |
