In the basement of a house as occupied by servants. (Basically the same as sunfunlili's post, but in one line ;-) ) The main point is that it refers to the part of the house the servants occupy, so these days it is usually used (by most people) in a historical context. |

Danke, dass da auch eine soziale Konnotation reinschwingt (Gegegnsatz zu above stairs), ist mir neu gewesen, aber leicht verständlich. Die von mir im OP gebrachten Übersetzungen stammen übrigens alle aus Wörterbüchern :-) |
