Frage: | if + would ... | |

"Could you please let us know if we would obtain a bulk discount for an order of XY?" Oder müsste es "[...] if we obtained a quantity discount [...]" heißen? Danke im Voraus! |

Antwort: | #910752 | |

If I've understood you correctly, it has to be "would" or "will". If you say "if we obtained" it sounds like you already made a bulk order and are asking if you were given a discount for this. |

Yes, the order is not placed already. But I thought there was a rule that after "if" one was not allowed to use "would" ("'If' und 'would', Satz kaputt.") ... |

I don't know that rule. The following sentences are all correct English but mean different things: Could you please let us know if we would obtain a bulk discount for an order of XY? =Could you please let us know whether if we were to place an order of XY (we're only thinking about placing the order, we haven't done it), we would in that case obtain a bulk discount? Could you please let us know if we will obtain a bulk discount for an order of XY? =Could you please let us know if we will be given a bulk discount for an order of XY - we're strongly thinking about placing an order or have already placed one and want to know what will happen Could you please let us know if we obtained a bulk discount for an order of XY? = We have already placed an order for XY. Please can you tell us if you have given us a bulk discount for this. |

Well, I assume that rule is made up by German English teachers ... ;) Thank you very much for your explanations! :) |

Never use "would" within an "if" sentence. If you did ---> big red remark: NO! |

I wonder if it's the "wenn" sort of "if" you can't use "would" after. Squirrel-Quattro's was the "ob" sort. It's definitely: "If I were rich" not "If I would be rich", "if I wanted to go" not "if I would want to go" etc. Although you can say "If you wouldn't mind" or "if you would be so kind" - but I think that's different. |

Antwort: | "If you wouldn't mind" ~ if you were willing not to mind; "if you would be so kind" ~ if you were prepared to be so kind | #910773 |

Antwort: | Your original sentence is fine | #910778 |

"Could you please let us know if we would obtain a bulk discount for an order of XY?" - Your sentence is fine. "But I thought there was a rule that after "if" one was not allowed to use "would" - I have never heard of this rule. The examples posted by Proteus at 14:10 are in frequent use. |
