Frage:
A German sentence translated as political when it meant intimite?
von Count-Orloff (US), 2019-10-22, 01:15  like dislike  Spam?
This may sound rather bizarre a question, and/or impossible to answer, but I am working with an English translation of a German document. The translator was a government official, suspicious of the political motives of the correspondents. The translator translated a sentence in the document as, "I would say something else if the cause was not at stake." I am trying to speculate a possible original for this translation. If, for example, the original sentence in German had the key words "Sache" and "Gefahr," this could render the translation to which I referred. But if, in fact, those specific words were used, might it have actually meant, "I would say something else if it wasn't risky." I have a suspicion that these two men were involved in a homosexual affair in Nazi Germany, and one was angry the other hadn't kept a promised liaison. However, of course such a statement would have to be made extremely cautiously. If one had no suspicion that the original sentence in German was indicative of a homosexual affair, but was interpreting it in the context of a political-business relationship between the two men, might the translator have translated it as stated above, instead of its actual meaning? Thanks in advance.

Please provide more information! Without context it's not possible to provide conclusive answers. What document and what "men" are your referring to? What makes you think that the translation is not faithful to the source?
