Frage:
verrechnen [österr.] [schweiz.]  - to charge
von Windfall (GB), 2019-12-05, 19:37  like dislike  Spam?
I'd like to add this to the dict. Duden says the "to charge" meaning is Austrian.

3. in Rechnung stellen, berechnen
Gebrauch
österreichisch
I think it's also Swiss. Can anyone confirm or deny that? Also, does anyone know if tagging this fin. as its subject is enough to disambiguate the meaning of charge?

Nein, ohne das schweiz. in diesem Sinn (Bedeutung 3).

4;fleurette, I just found a Swiss example on Linguee where "verrechnen" has been translated as "charge". Can you tell if this is a mistranslation or is it an exception where "verrechnen" does mean "charge" in Swiss German:
Dies ist jedoch eine kostenpflichtige Dienstleistung, welche wir nach Aufwand verrechnen müssen.
However, we have to charge you for this service according to our expenses.

Das Linguee Beispiel gehört aber zu Duden Bedeutung 1. Man schreibt eine Rechnung und "berechnet" die Dienstleistung. Das müsste Standard-Deutsch sein und der Eintrag "verrechnen/to charge" ohne Regionaltag bestätigt werden.

Thanks, fleurette. I wouldn't usually translate meaning 1 with "charge", but that may be my fault for not understanding meaning 1 well enough. I have now noticed that we have the entry " to invoice sth. at cost - etw.Akk. nach Aufwand verrechnen". The thing is, I really do understand "invoice" here as "in Rechnung stellen" (meaning 3), so I'm wondering if I'm missing something about the English or the German here.

Which Linguee entry are you talking about? Can you post a link? What kind of source is it? Which language is the original one?

4;Proofreader, I'm talking about the Linguee entry I quoted above (admittedly without the quotation marks):
"Dies ist jedoch eine kostenpflichtige Dienstleistung, welche wir nach Aufwand verrechnen müssen."
"However, we have to charge you for this service according to our expenses."

Hopefully this link should take you to it: https://www.linguee.com/english-german/search?source=auto&query....

und der neue Eintrag - braucht es ein Regionaltag oder ist es Standardsprache? https://contribute.dict.cc/?action=show-history&id=1433275

4;fleurette, Duden says "verrechnen" only means "in Rechnung stellen" in Austria. I asked about Switzerland because I had seen a Swiss text where I thought "verrechnen" meant "in Rechnung stellen". We might need some Germans to say whether it can be used with this meaning in Germany. the "to invoice sth. at cost" entry suggests to me that it perhaps can be used like that everywhere, but then the question becomes: why does Duden think "verrechnen" can only be used to mean "in Rechnung stellen" in Austria if it can also be used with this meaning elsewhere?
