Frage:
'heroin-addicted-lying-on-newspaper-in-squat'

"Squat" here is a euphemism for "shit," which is a common use for the word (You don't know squat!)

The author is making the point that some people have an inordinate fear of drugs because they believe taking drugs will invariably lead to a heroin-like addiction, with addicts living on the street, lying on some newspaper in their own excrement. But, the author says, such a belief is unrealistic.

squat here is more likely to mean besetztes Haus. dict.cc: squat
If it were a normal sentence, you would need a squat, but I think the hyphenated phrase can be considered 'headline style'.

"Squat" for besetztes Haus is American English as well. I rejected that interpretation because of the grammatical  "in-squat" oddity (which Llllama mentioned) and because squatters generally don't bed down on newspaper. But if "squat" never or rarely stands for 'shit' in British English, Lllama's interpretation is most likely the correct one.

I always thought that it meant that the addict was lying on a newspaper inside of an establishment that was not owned by them. In this case, the sentence could mean a Heroin addict is lying on a newspaper in a building or house not owned by them.

Stereotypes: lots of addicts are homeless; lots of homeless people sleep in squats --> lots of addicts sleep in squats. Squats are used by drug users to take their drugs and if there isn't any furniture, they might just be lying on the floor, on newspaper if they're lucky.

I agree. It sounds more logical that a person would be lying on a newspaper in a vacant house, rather than their own excrement.

Thanks all!

Well, the author is not above using strong language. A sample: Don't mess about worrying 'that 'it's not natural' and all that shit. This is the author (not a character) talking. She's speaking directly to the reader.

After some more thought, I'm going to stand by my first interpretation. The author may have used the euphemism 'squat' instead of 'shit' to show some respect for even the most unsavory of our fellow human beings. But hey, dudes, I've been wrong many times before and don't mind saying so.  :-)
